The Beginning

photo-of-t-krishnamacharya

A few decades ago, Yoga education was usually secretly shared and not so easy to obtain for the wider audience. Yogācārya Śrī T Krishnamacharya, a man who was born in a small village from the southern part of India, walked miles to learn the art of Yoga to meet his guru Sri Ramamohan Brahmachari and studied Yoga for more than 8 years in Tibet. He was a yoga teacher, ayurvedic healer and a scholar who opened the boundaries of yoga teachings to the world.

Yogācārya Śrī T Krishnamacharya revived the Viniyoga which also integrated vinyasa. His involvement in the revival of Hathayoga has been very significant and has created made a huge difference to the revival of ancient teachings. He excelled in the studies of Yogasūtras of Patañjali, mastered asanas, pranayama and all other perspectives of therapeutic yoga. He religiously prescribed asanas after understanding an individuals constitution (Vata, pitta, Kapha) and health condition. He was primarily remembered for his power in healing those who experienced mental and physical illness.

Legacy Continues...

Most forms of yoga taught today is directly or indirectly connected to the yoga invented and taught by Yogācārya Śrī T Krishnamacharya, who believed yoga must be accessible by everyone irrespective of age, religion, nationality, caste or gender. His teachings created an enormous impression in the 20th century and created a huge difference in the world by raising millions of yoga practitioners and teachers. His contribution to the world is priceless and hence is recognised as the ‘Father of modern yoga.’

Śrī T Krishnamacharya was a legend who lived more than a hundred years, and his legacy was continued by his son Śrī TKV Desikachar who understood the power of his Father’s teachings and followed his footprints. He made the yoga teachings readily available and also developed numerous methods so that it is fully understood and remembered forever. He also became an author of many books that touched thousands of hearts, and this journey is upheld by his grandson Dr Kausthub Desikachar who is now the lineage holder of the VINIYOGA® tradition.

Poetry : Footsteps in the heart

When stormy clouds, covered my home,
leaving me paralyzed, and full of shame,
the joy of life, left me alone,
leaving me with a lot to moan.

My eyes could see, yet not perceive,
my ears could hear, but not receive,
my mind could imagine, yet not conceive,
my heart was heavy, and began to heave.

Soon, a little angel walked my way,
with an open heart, that is to say,
lighting my fire, making me see day,
her footsteps in my heart were there to stay.

Freeing me from the clutches of darkness,
the power in me, she began to harness,
I embrace this love, with much fondness,
celebrating this life of loving kindness.
