Udāna Vāyu Mantra – Benefits And Functions Of Udāna Vāyu | Dr Kausthub Desikachar

oṁ udānāya svāha
ॐ उदानाय स्वाहा

In the Sanskrit etymology, “ud” indicates “up.” Udāna Vāyu is one of the five Prana Vayus, also known as the “Vital Winds,” responsible for the flow of energy in our bodies. Udāna Vāyu resides in the throat region where the Viśuddhi-cakra is located and stimulates the upward flow of energy from lower to upper cakra-s.

Dr Kausthub Desikachar says udāna-vāyu is the force of expression, not merely by words but also with our actions, refined interpretations of our feelings and emotions. It spurs all the sensory receptors such as the eyes, nose, tongue, and ears. The Udāna-vāyu, being responsible for communication, is also vital for managing inter-personal bonds, which depend on respectful and meaningful communication.

When Udāna-vāyu is balanced, we express our feelings and communicate assertively. Whereas when the udāna-vāyu is not balanced in our body, we perceive it challenging to effectively communicate and express our feelings to the other person. Loss of words while communicating, using too many words, or inapt speech in a conversation, leaving behind a sense of defeat and doubt of oneself are manifestations of imbalanced udāna-vāyu.

When and How Should One Recite Udāna-vāyu Mantra?

Dr Kausthub Desikachar recommends laying your hands in the throat region and listening to the udāna-vāyu mantra 12 times, three times a day, at sunrise, midday, and sunset time. Kausthub adds by saying that this mantra sanctifies the Udāna-vāyu and will help us a be in the sense of balance and harmony in our expressions.

Dr Kausthub Desikachar wishes you health & happiness in abundance.
